# HUMANS.md > HUMANS.md is an open file format that tells AI agents how to work with one person: what they read, what they decide, and when an agent may interrupt them. AGENTS.md is for your codebase. HUMANS.md is for you. - One file per person: `~/.humans/me.md` (fields only, shared) and `~/.humans/me.source.md` (free text, never leaves the machine). - Three blocks: `reading`, `deciding`, `interrupting`, plus `context`. Closed values, checked by a JSON Schema. - Precedence: the repository's rules always win. A HUMANS.md profile can reduce what an agent asks; it never grants a permission. - Preferences only, never diagnoses. Health terms are refused. - Spec under CC BY 4.0, tools under MIT. It never requires a cmdAI product. ## Docs - [Specification v0.2](https://humansmd.dev/spec): the format, rules and locations - [Specification as plain Markdown](https://humansmd.dev/spec.md) - [AGENTS.md vs HUMANS.md](https://humansmd.dev/agents-md-vs-humans-md): which file does what - [Implementations](https://humansmd.dev/implementations): Claude Code, Codex, MCP server, skill - [FAQ](https://humansmd.dev/faq)
